TIPS FOR THE FEMALE DRUMMERS ON INSTAGRAM

Here are some tips for any female drummer trying to be more visible on Instagram.

Firstly, let's make it clear that these tips are addressed to the really practicing drummerFrom my many years' experience, I have come to the conclusion that Instagram is the right tool for people who are passionate about drumming and constantly want to improve their drumming skills. Of course, social media are not only suitable for the top-notch drummers but also for beginners. This is why @femaledrummers account has always supported and will continue to support beginners. But, this is a tough and competitive world in which we live, so let's keep in mind some simple tips on how to manage your accounts and how to show off your best. If you google you will find many articles on how to succeed to instagram and gain more followers, so here we will focus more on... drumming posts!

TIP 1: IT'S ALL ABOUT THE RIGHT ANGLE!

Camera, yes you need a camera! You are lucky that the drums do not need any special treatment on the microphones in order to be heard by a simple mobile camera. But it does matter where you put the camera and what it will show. So, let's say a good shooting angle is to have your face and some parts of the drums clearly visible. I've often seen a lot of good drummers not show their faces or shoot videos from bad shooting angles, even though they play very well. Don't forget to smile and if possible look at the camera lens while playing! Is it too challenging? Yes! That's why you're here, right? It's not my intention to give some tips about how to record your drums, but I suggest you check this account: @soundslikeadrum. I don't know them personally but I'm a sound engineer and I think they're doing a really great job! Also, here's a cool article I found about video lighting tips.

TIP 2: DRUMS IS WHAT YOU ARE HERE FOR!

You may have heard many times that the secret to Instagram success is consistency. Well, I couldn't agree more. It would be very helpful if you decided that your account would be only about you and your drumkit. After all, your followers probably follow you because they like to see you play the drums, and not because they care which cafe you went to or when you took the dog for a walk. So, focus on sharing drumming posts, whether these are videos, photos of your drumkit and new sticks, live performances with your band, artistic photos of you and your kit outdoors, even your visit to a music store. If you have nothing to share for a long period of time it's always better to upload a photo of you and your broken sticks than of your new lipstick!

TIP 3: POSTING FREQUENCY

You're a drummer right? This means that your neighbors hate you and you hate them back. If you don't then you are probably the luckiest drummer on the planet. If you have no neighbors at all, well, you are the luckiest person period. Being a drummer means you will never enjoy your instrument for as long as you would like. So the posts will be rare. When you are in a drum room, take lots of videos and photos and save them. Don't rush to upload them directly. There will be days when you will not have material to upload. Ah! And don't forget to enjoy the moment in that room! 2 or 3 times a week you can share something to your feed. Best days to post: Monday, Friday, Saturday and maybe Tuesday. When you don't have something to post, don't be frivolous. Be patient and take advantage of time for more practice! After all, more practice means more views.

TIP 4: BE SOCIAL, YOU'RE ON SOCIAL MEDIA!

Ok I know, your drums is your voice but, it's cool to interact with others. When a big page like @femaledrummers, features your video you should go and see who liked it, who commented and respond to the comments. Don't just reply with emojis, write something, ask, answer, interact. Try to make your own community of other female drummers. I saw a new account: @femaledrummersunited. Some women teamed up to support female drummers and this is really cool! And something else, learn to accept criticism with grace and appreciation. There's no need to defend yourself, or lash back. Find the truth behind a malicious comment. Most likely this truth will be that you need more practice.

TIP 5: HASHTAGS

Some drumming hasthags, use some of them:

I believe that there are those who practice, have passion and patience and the ones who simply don't.
